Diode or Nd:YAG for Indian skin? How wavelength and skin tone decide which laser is right for you — a straight guide from a Dwarka clinic.
Short version. If your skin sits on the deeper or dusky side, the longer 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength is the safer standard, because it slips past the pigment sitting in your skin and releases its heat down at the follicle. If you’re lighter to medium — which covers a lot of Indian skin — diode, around 800–810 nm, works well and clears large areas faster.
Then the part that matters more than either name: a clinic worth your money picks by your skin tone, not by whichever machine it happens to own.
That’s the answer. What follows is why those numbers behave the way they do, what a wrong pick actually does to Indian skin, and the questions that tell you in about ninety seconds whether a clinic is choosing or selling.
The one number that decides most of it
Wavelength, measured in nanometres. Think of it as how deep the light goes before it gives up its energy.
Short wavelengths are greedy. They’re absorbed hard and fast by the first pigment they meet — and on Indian skin, that’s your skin, not your hair. Long wavelengths are indifferent to that surface melanin. They travel further down and spend their energy at the follicle, which is exactly where you want it.
So 1064 nm isn’t “stronger” than 810 nm in any useful sense. It’s deeper, and fussier about what it heats. That’s the whole diode-versus-Nd:YAG conversation, and once you have it, the marketing gets easy to see through.
Your skin tone, without the jargon
Clinics talk about Fitzpatrick types I to VI. You don’t need the scale, you need the honest question behind it — how easily does your skin tan, and how easily does it burn?
Most Indian skin lands in three practical buckets:
- Tans easily, rarely burns. Wheatish, light-medium. Diode is usually comfortable here.
- Always tans, almost never burns. Medium to dusky, the largest group we see in Dwarka. Either wavelength can work, and the settings do the deciding.
- Deeply pigmented, never burns. Nd:YAG is the steadier default, and a patch test isn’t optional.
One catch nobody mentions. Your bucket isn’t fixed. A Delhi May on a scooter from Palam or Uttam Nagar can push you one step deeper for a few weeks, which is why a session booked in April and a session booked in June aren’t the same session.

Read the last column twice. Every row has one. There is no wavelength without a trade-off, and any clinic presenting one as flawless has stopped describing physics and started describing a price list.
What goes wrong when the pick is off
Two things, and they look different on the calendar.
Immediately. Too much energy landing in skin pigment instead of hair means a burn — sharp pain during the pulse, a white or grey blanch that doesn’t fade, blistering or crusting over the next day.
Three days later. The one that catches people out. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — irritated skin responds by making more pigment. You paid to remove hair and ended up with a patch darker than the skin around it. Indian skin is prone to this, and it’s slow to settle.
Which is why we stay careful with energy on deeper tones even when the wavelength is right. Set-in darkening is a separate correction later, usually pigment-targeted work like Q-Switch treatment from ₹4,000 a session — an expensive way to learn the first clinic was in a hurry.
Why the patch test outranks the brochure
Here’s the thing about all of the above. It’s a starting hypothesis, not an answer.
Skin tone charts are a guide. How your skin responds to a given energy on a given area is a fact, and there’s exactly one way to get it — a handful of pulses on a small discreet patch, then 24 to 72 hours of waiting and looking.
Mild redness that settles within hours is normal. A grey-white patch, blistering, or new darkening on day two means the settings were wrong — learned on two square centimetres instead of a full leg. We’ve moved clients we’d assumed were straightforward diode candidates onto a longer wavelength after exactly that.
The patch test is where a clinic finds out it was wrong cheaply.

The read comes before the package — skin tone, tan history and hair colour all change what gets used and at what setting.
Questions worth asking before you pay
Five, and they take a minute:
- Which wavelength will you use on my skin tone, and why that one? A category answer — diode, Nd:YAG — is a good sign. “It’s the latest imported machine” is not an answer.
- Will you patch test before the first full session? If the answer is “we’ll just start today”, you’ve learned something.
- Who sets the parameters, and do they change per area? Upper lip and calf on the same setting is a mistake.
- What happens if I darken afterwards? A clinic that has never seen it either hasn’t treated much Indian skin or isn’t telling you.
- How many sessions before I should judge results? Anything under six is optimistic. 6 to 8 sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, is the honest range for 70–90% lasting reduction.

Where neither wavelength helps
The honest limits, because they matter more than the diode-versus-Nd:YAG debate ever will:
- Grey, white, blonde or red hair. No wavelength sees it. There’s no dark pigment in the hair to absorb the light, so nothing heats the follicle. A hard limit, not a settings problem — and no clinic can engineer around it.
- Very fine vellus hair. Too little pigment, poor energy transfer, disappointing results.
- A fresh tan. Extra pigment in exactly the wrong layer. Wait two to four weeks.
- Hormonal drivers such as PCOS. Laser reduces what’s there; it doesn’t stop new follicles switching on, so maintenance is part of the plan rather than a failure of it.
- Active infection, eczema flare or open lesions in the area, and pregnancy, where we postpone by default.
And the biggest one. The operator matters more than the badge on the machine. A well-run diode at correct settings on medium skin beats a poorly-run Nd:YAG, and the reverse is equally true.
