Laser vs Waxing vs Threading: The Real 2-Year Cost

Waxing wins the day and loses the decade. That’s the short answer.

A monthly salon wax of underarms, arms and legs at typical Delhi rates works out to roughly ₹27,600–42,000 across 24 months. A laser course at our clinic starts from ₹1,500 a session, or ₹29,999 for a 12-session package across combined areas. Same ballpark money.

Except at the end of those two years, one person has spent around 36 hours in a salon chair and still has every single hair. The other has spent about six hours in total, has 70–90% less hair in the treated areas, and isn’t booking anything next month.

That’s the honest version of the question we field weekly at our Sector 8 clinic. Here’s the full math — including the costs that never show up on a bill.

The 24-month money table

One thing before the numbers. The salon column is illustrative, not a quote. Waxing rates in Delhi swing wildly between a neighbourhood parlour in Uttam Nagar and a chain salon in a Janakpuri mall, and they change with the season. We’re using a mid-range Delhi band for underarms plus full arms plus full legs. Check your own last three bills — that’s your real number.

The crossover isn’t dramatic — it’s quiet. Somewhere around month 20 to 24 the two columns cross, and after that the waxing column just keeps climbing while the laser column mostly flatlines. Our current per-area rates are on the price list.

The costs nobody puts on the bill

Money is the easy part. The rest is where waxing quietly gets expensive.

Time. Ninety minutes door to door for a full waxing appointment, twelve times a year, is 18 hours annually. That’s two working days, gone, every year, forever. Nobody budgets for it because it’s paid in Sunday afternoons rather than rupees.

Pain that never improves. Waxing hurts the same on visit one and visit fifty — the hair is ripped out by the root each time, and the root grows back at full thickness. Laser goes the other way. Ingrowns and bumps. The classic waxing tax. Hair that snaps below the surface curls back in, especially on coarse Indian body hair, and you get the post-wax rash of red bumps for two or three days after every appointment.

Darkening from repeated trauma. This is the one people don’t connect. Indian skin responds to repeated friction, heat and pulling with pigment. Underarms and bikini lines that have been waxed monthly for years often end up several shades darker than the skin around them — which then becomes its own treatment bill. The stubble calendar. Between waxes you need enough regrowth for the wax to grip — usually a quarter of an inch. So there’s a stretch of every month where you’re deliberately walking around with stubble, planning outfits around it. With laser, growth thins steadily instead of resetting.

Threading is a different calculation

Be careful about lumping threading in with waxing. The money case is genuinely weaker.

Threading a single line — brows, upper lip, chin — costs from ₹60 at our own salon counter. Fortnightly for two years, that’s a few thousand rupees total, and upper lip laser at from ₹1,500 a session across six to eight sessions costs more than that outright.

So for one small line, laser doesn’t win on money. It wins on the other three columns: 52 fewer appointments, no fortnightly regrowth window, and no repeated trauma on the thinnest skin on your face. Plenty of our facial-laser clients from Sector 12 and Palam came for the schedule, not the savings, and we’d rather say that plainly than pretend the arithmetic is something it isn’t.

What the two-year cost actually is depends on which areas you treat and how coarse the hair is — that’s the assessment, not a menu price.

Where this doesn’t add up

The honest limits, because the maths breaks for several people.

• You barely remove hair. If you wax twice a year before a wedding or a holiday, waxing is cheaper and always will be. Don’t let anyone build you a package.
• The money is upfront. ₹29,999 in one go is a real decision, and a ₹400 wax isn’t. Laser is cheaper over 24 months and more expensive this Tuesday. Both things are true.
• Grey, white or blonde hair. The laser targets pigment in the hair. No pigment, nothing to target — it won’t work, and no financial argument changes that.
• Hormonal areas. Chin and jawline hair driven by PCOS or thyroid issues can need light ongoing top-ups rather than stopping cleanly. Budget for that instead of being surprised by it.
• You want a fixed number. Session counts vary with hair coarseness, area and skin tone. Any clinic quoting an exact final figure before seeing your skin is guessing.
