PRP Hair Treatment: Pre-Care and Post-Care, Day by Day

Booked a PRP session for hair loss? A Dwarka clinic's day-by-day guide — how to prepare, what to avoid after, when to wash your hair, and what's normal.

PRP is a treatment where what you do around the session genuinely shows in the result — because the treatment is your own blood platelets, and their quality on the day depends on you. Here’s the day-by-day guide we give every hair client at our Sector 8, Dwarka clinic.

The week before: quiet preparation

  • Hydrate properly for 2–3 days before. Well-hydrated blood separates better in the centrifuge — a practical detail most people never hear.
  • Skip alcohol for 24–48 hours before your session, and avoid smoking on the day. Both measurably affect platelet function — the exact cells doing the work.
  • Check your supplements. Fish oil and vitamin E can increase bruising at injection sites; mention anything you take at your assessment, including blood thinners — that’s a conversation for the clinician, not a reason to self-cancel.
  • Eat normally. Come fed, not fasting. A meal beforehand keeps you comfortable through the blood draw.

The morning of your session

Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Clean scalp, then nothing on it — no oil, no serum, no gel, no spray. The scalp needs to be clean for injections, and anything applied has to be cleaned off anyway.

Wear something comfortable, plan a normal day around it — a PRP session is 45–60 minutes and you can drive yourself home.

Scalp preparation for PRP at Brightonic clinic, Sector 8 Dwarka

Clean, product-free scalp on the day — the simplest thing you can do for a smooth session.

After the session: day by day

Day 0 (session day): Don’t touch, scratch or massage the scalp. No washing. Skip the gym, swimming, sauna and alcohol today. Mild soreness or tightness at injection points is normal — plain paracetamol is fine if needed, but avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen for 3–4 days (they work against the inflammation PRP deliberately creates to trigger growth — ask us if that sounds odd; it’s the whole mechanism).

Day 1: You can wash your hair after 24 hours — lukewarm water, mild shampoo, gentle fingers. No hot water, no vigorous rubbing.

Days 2–3: Normal routine returns. Still avoid styling products, hair spray and swimming. Light exercise is fine from day 2; heavy sweating sessions from day 3.

Days 3–4 onward: Hair oil and champi can return after day 4 — gently at first. Colouring or chemical treatments should wait a full week.

What’s normal vs what’s not

Normal: soreness and tightness for 1–2 days, tiny bruise points, mild swelling, a headache-ish feeling the first evening. Not normal: severe or worsening pain, spreading redness, fever, or discharge at injection sites — message your clinic the same day with a photo. Genuine problems after PRP are rare (it’s your own blood — there’s nothing foreign to react to), but quick photos beat slow worries.

Honesty section: aftercare doesn’t replace the course

Perfect aftercare around a single session won’t regrow hair — PRP works as a course (typically 4–6 sessions, 3–4 weeks apart) with results building from month two or three. If a clinic sells you one session as a fix, the aftercare sheet is the least of the problems. Our PRP runs from ₹10,000 for 5 sessions with single-use sealed kits; whether you’re even a good candidate is a scalp assessment conversation first.

Key takeaway: Hydrate before, come with a clean product-free scalp, wait 24 hours to wash, keep heat and products away for 48, and skip ibuprofen-type painkillers for 3–4 days. Soreness is normal; fever or spreading redness is not. And it’s a course, not a one-off.

Quick answers

What should I do before a PRP hair treatment session?
Come well-hydrated (2–3 glasses of water that morning), eat a normal meal beforehand, and wash your hair the same morning with a mild shampoo — clean scalp, no oils, gels or sprays. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and smoking on the day; both affect platelet quality, which is literally what PRP uses.
When can I wash my hair after PRP?
Wait 24 hours, then wash gently with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, vigorous scrubbing, and styling products for 48 hours. Hair oils and head massage should wait 3–4 days — the injection points need time to settle.
Is scalp soreness normal after PRP?
Yes — mild soreness, tightness or tenderness at injection points for 1–2 days is completely normal, sometimes with slight swelling. Not normal — severe pain, spreading redness, fever or discharge. Those warrant a same-day call to your clinic, not waiting.
